One young adult connected with Fostering Hope worked steadily toward becoming a certified nursing assistant. Earning the license opened the door to consistent employment, but that achievement was only part of the story. With ongoing support and encouragement, the young adult continued learning how to manage the responsibilities that come with work and independent living.

After two years of progress, another milestone arrived when she paid her full rent independently. The young adult reflected, “I’m 28 and finally feel like an adult now.”

The statement captures something important about Fostering Hope’s approach. Success does not always happen according to a traditional timeline, especially for someone who entered adulthood without dependable family support. Trauma, interrupted education, housing instability, and limited access to transportation can make each step harder. A license, a steady job, and a rent payment may look like individual accomplishments, and they certainly are. But consistent relationships often make those accomplishments possible. A coordinator who helps someone think through a challenge, a volunteer who offers encouragement after a setback, or a donor who provides resources for the journey can help create the conditions in which persistence grows.

Staying beside a young adult and celebrating each step without disappearing before the next one is truly what long-term, dependable, healing support looks like. Independence is not the absence of relationships. Healthy independence grows from knowing there are trustworthy people who believe in you while you learn to believe in yourself.
