Turning 18 is often described as the beginning of adulthood. For many young people, however, independence develops slowly and with a great deal of family support. Parents help complete forms, practice job interviews, troubleshoot car problems, explain leases, and provide a place to land when an early attempt does not work out.
Young people aging out of foster care may enter adulthood without that dependable safety net. They are expected to make high-stakes decisions while also navigating the effects of trauma and instability. A missed paycheck, unreliable car, health emergency, or housing problem can quickly become a crisis when there is no trusted adult to call.
Fostering Hope’s commitment does not end when foster care does. Through Fostering Adulthood, young people receive consistent relational support while they build the skills and stability needed for adult life. Coordinators and volunteers walk alongside them through employment, education, transportation, housing, parenting, and everyday decisions.
This support is not about taking over. It is about ensuring that a young adult has what many of us have always had, people who will listen, offer perspective, celebrate progress, and remain present after a setback. Growth rarely follows a straight line. Young adults need a safe place to learn, try again, and discover that one difficult decision does not define their future.
Healthy adulthood is built through both opportunity and belonging. A job matters, but so does having someone who asks how the first week went. Housing matters, but so does knowing who to call when something breaks. Transportation matters because it connects a young person to work, school, appointments, and relationships.
Aging out of foster care should not mean aging out of family. By investing in enduring relationships, our community can help young adults move toward independence without requiring them to do it alone. Connect with us to learn how you can help a young adult build a future grounded in connection and hope.
