Foster parents manage appointments, school communication, therapies, family visits, court-related changes, and the everyday needs of every child in the home. They also help children navigate grief, trauma, and transitions that may be difficult to predict. Even deeply committed parents can become exhausted when they are expected to carry these responsibilities alone.

When a foster family closes its home because the strain has become unsustainable, the loss extends beyond the number of available beds. Children may have fewer opportunities to remain in their community, stay connected with siblings, or find a family prepared to meet their needs. A crowded appointment schedule becomes possible when someone provides a ride. A foster parent who feels discouraged has people who understand the commitment and remind the family that they are not alone.

Retention is not about pressuring foster parents to continue regardless of their circumstances. It is about creating an environment in which families have the support they need to make healthy, sustainable decisions. It recognizes that foster parents are human beings who also need care, rest, affirmation, and belonging.
